医薬品開発においては、医薬品候補が厚生労働省より承認されて患者さんに提供（投与）されるために、あらかじめ健常な人での安全性や患者さんでの効果や安全性を確認しなければなりません。そのために実施される、人を対象とした新薬の承認申請のための試験を「治験」といいます。治験は、ボランティアで構成される健常な人、効果を示すと予想される患者さんで実施され、GCP（医薬品の臨床試験実施にあたって、倫理性、科学性及び信頼性の確保を目的とした基準に関する省令）に定められた要件を充たす医療機関（十分な医療設備、治験実施を責任を持って遂行する医師、看護師、薬剤師等が充足していること、治験審査委員会が利用可能であること、緊急時に直ちに必要な治療が実施できること）において、以下の通常3つのステップ（相）を踏んで進められます。

メディフォムは、医療機関の治験業務を支援／補助する北海道の治験施設支援機関(SMO)です。医療機関における医薬品等の臨床試験におけるSMO（Site Management Organization ; 治験実施施設管理機関）として治験業務の支援／補助を行うことを目的として2002年4月より受託を開始致しました。また、「近隣の医療機関」と提携して医薬品及び食品臨床試験の拠点として、GCPに対応した生物学的同等性試験や各種ヘルスクレームに対応した食品臨床試験を受託しております。
